WHAT DOES BAREFOOT SHOES FOR RUNNING MEAN?

New to barefoot shoes. We live in Montana wherever it may get to -20 or decrease. Any suggestions on boots? Am I suitable in considering you would have to have the thick boot to guard from the acute cold? Hunt for boots with a wide toe box probably?
